History
The International Network on Migration and Development (INMD) initiated its activities in 2002 with a grant from the Ford Foundation, and was formally constituted as a nongovernmental organization (NGO) in October 2003. Since then, it has been supported by grants from the MacArthur, Ford, Rockefeller foundations, by CONACyT/Mexico and by the Universidad Autonoma de Zacatecas (Mexico). INMD´s headquarters are at the Institute for Development Studies at the Universidad Autonoma de Zacatecas, in Mexico.
Since its inception, the INMD has consolidated a global network of scholars, students, migrant associations, civil-society organizations, and other institutions concerned with the theoretical and practical understanding of the complex relationship between migration and development.
The INMD has contributed to policy-oriented debates and exchange of experiences among scholars, activists, and officials, interested in/or responsible for the migration and development topic; this is done through research, advocacy, publications, and networking (organization of conferences, seminars and workshops). These activities aim at:
Disseminating news and informing public opinion about migration and development issues
Informing decision makers, migrants´ leaders, activists, and researchers with hard data
Promoting debates on emerging topics
Advising governments and civil society organizations on key policy issues about migration and development
Analyzing root causes of migration in different migration corridors
Developing strategic indicators about costs and benefits of migration for countries of origin and destination, as well as for migrants and their families
Main channels for the dissemination of these activities are the INMD’s webpage and its journal, “Migration and Development” (Migración y Desarrollo).
Since 2009 has joined People Global Action on Migration, Development and Human Rights (PGA), aiming at strengthening civil society participation and improving the process of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).
